Pairing bold colors and patterns with unexpected textures and materials, mixed media artist Katie Heimbold conjures up an immersive world of wonder with her work, inviting viewers to pause and find peace in the midst of our increasingly chaotic world.

Often rooted in familiar shapes and symbols, Heimbold’s bright, joyful designs embrace freedom and catharsis, defying expectations with the use of found objects and celebrating the act of creation as a portal to a deeper understanding of our thoughts and emotions.

A native of Albany, New York, Heimbold first fell in love with color and curation on Sunday mornings, when her father would share the New York Times Art & Design section with her. Day trips to the Met and MoMA eventually gave way to backpacking adventures across Europe, where Heimbold sought to absorb as much as possible from the continent’s endless array of museums and galleries. As a student at St. Lawrence University, Heimbold spent a semester studying abroad in Kenya, where she learned firsthand about pattern and textile printing techniques while interning at the Bombolulu Workshops and Cultural Centre in Mombasa. After graduation, she worked in the textile industry in New York City before going on to earn her Masters in Art Education at the Pratt Institute. A dedicated believer in the importance of collaboration and community building, Heimbold spent two years serving as the Head of Art Education at the Stamford Museum & Nature Center in Stamford, Connecticut, where she created exhibitions and hands-on experiences for children and families designed to help deepen their appreciation for and understanding of the arts in everyday life.

Heimbold currently lives in Connecticut with her husband, the musician Pete Francis, and their two children. The two have partnered on a variety of creative projects over the years, including several album covers, and together launched the Dragoncrest Collective, a community organization that seeks to bring artists and art-lovers together through a series of live, interactive shows and events.
